Dumb Angel: The Life & Music of Dennis Wilson
Published in Paperback by Creation Books (01 April, 2001)
Authors: Adam Webb and Peter Buck
Average review score:

Good intentions, not-so-good results
Besides the lack of fact-checking mentioned above, I was bothered by the lack of basic writing skills Webb displays. The occasional misplaced apostrophe I can ignore, but this book is rife with mistakes, the most annoying of them being the author's habit of using incomplete sentences.

However, if you're not bothered by that sort of thing, this book is a quick and interesting (if not particularly accurate) read.

Okay But Error Filled
Adam Webb has done a good thing by bringing attention to Dennis Wilson's wonderful music. But this book needed some decent editing and fact checking in a big way. Webb continually makes mistakes that even the novice Beach Boy fan would catch. For example by stating that Dennis was not at the "Surfin" sessions. It is well documented that Dennis was there, his voice is obviously on the recording, and he sang a lead line on the B-side "Luau". Webb also states that Dennis sang lead on "Catch A Wave". No. That was Mike Love. Webb states that Brian's song "Lay Down Burden" was on his BW solo LP when in fact it was on his "Imagination" LP. These kind of annoying errors are rampant in this book. It takes away from the believability and enjoyment factor in my opinion.

A Great Book!
I think this book rates really well alongside Jon Stebbin's book on Dennis from last year. There is some overlap, but Webb concentrates more on the music and deflating some myths surrounding the Beach Boys most underrated member. Most people know about Dennis for his rock n roll lifestyle and association with Charles Manson, but few know that he also created an awesome body of music.

Maybe it's a little one-sided but there are some cool interviews with key collaborators and Webb writes strongly with a genuine passion for Dennis Wilson's work. If you're intruiged by what you read here I strongly recommend that you search high and low for a copy of "Pacific Ocean Blue".

Acts of Love
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (March, 1997)
Authors: Judith Michael and Buck Schirner
Average review score:

Very good, read it on the beach book.
Judith Michael strikes again! The use of letters to drive the plot along is very inventive. At times, some of the characters, especially Luke, are a little hard to like, but as the book moves on, it gets much better. A very good book for a summer distraction.

A book you'll hate to put down, but LOVE to pick up!
The authors' use of letters was a huge attraction! Just as Luke, one of the central characters, longed to get back each night to Jessica's letters, I, too, looked forward to getting back to this book so I could discover what happened to Jessica. Then, later, I looked forward to Luke's letters to Jessica.

It made me realize how the art of letter writing is lost and how powerful it can be. You can put so much detail in a letter about your inner-most thoughts. After reading this book, I have decided to begin writing letters to my husband - to tell him of my thoughts about the day that I would never otherwise share. I seem to tell him what I did during the day but leave out the vivid descriptions and how I felt about the day.

Rarely does a book make you want to adapt a new bahavior in your private life.

I loved this book!

A Wonderful Book!
I loved this book to death! I swear, this is one of the greatest books ever. Not to mention the fact that my name is Jessica and I'm in love with a Luke...just like in the book. Hehehe, well, what are you waiting for? Go read it!

Last of the Dixie Heroes
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (05 June, 2001)
Authors: Peter Abrahams and Buck Schirner
Average review score:

Brainless
This book had a catchy title and I picked it up. It was a great read from the start but was so twisted near the end.

The main character Roy seemed so clueless. The author's constant uses of "What?", "I don't know what you mean", and Roy's constant state of bewilderment was almost laughable. He had no clue of what people were saying around him. In fact, a whole page is dedicated to someone trying to clue him in. For example when Roy was told his whole department was let go he didn't get it. Even though all of the furniture, computers, and cubes were gone Roy was still wondering when he was going to start his new job as the boss of a department that was missing. The conference call with NY was classic, Roy ripping his shirt off because he couldn't breathe... correction Curtis's shirt, because Roy forgot he was wearing a UGA Football T-Shirt. The ending made no sense. I should write a book if they publish this junk.

To fast an ending
This book was a great read at first, and very interesting, was hard to put down. but the last part of the book started draging then just ended all of a sudden leaving me to wonder,,what the hell just happened!!

South never quit rising
If you love history and understand what the War between the States was really about, then you will love the Last of the Dixie Heroes. Peter Abrahams takes a simple idea and gives us a little mystery in why Southerns had it right. Finally, someone has the ability to put into words the meaning of Dixie and to the people who still hold to the culture of what America could of been. The book reveals the truth that War between the States was not about slavery or even Northern aggression, but about those who fought for a way of life.

Computer Explorations in Signals and Systems Using MATLAB
Published in Textbook Binding by Prentice Hall (01 November, 1996)
Authors: John R. Buck, Michael M. Daniel, and Andrew C. Singer
Average review score:

Absolutely worthless
The book is anything but teaching how to use matlab. Instead, the book is simply a collection of signals and systems problem set. And answers to questions are NOT given in the book. Nor is there any solved examples. Good job!

A Good MatLab Sig and Sys Tutorial.
Each Section has a MatLab command it starts with. Explains the command, then puts it to use. A very good Sig and Sys MatLab book.

Fly Fishing in North Carolina
Published in Paperback by Down Home Pr (April, 1995)
Authors: Buck Paysour and Bob Timberlake
Average review score:

This is not a good reference book on Fly Fishing in NC
This is not a book that someone should read if they want an in depth review of fly fishing opportunities in North Carolina. Nice folksy stories about fishing experiences but that's it. Go to a local fly shop in North Carolina and learn more in one afternoon.

i couldn't believe folks rated it so low
If you are looking for an intruction book, this is not it, but if you want to read an honest refreshing book about someone's experience and joy of fishing in this beautiful state of ours, it is a good read. And it does have helpful advice within the stories. I got it from the library, and after reading it Im getting one to keep in the home library.

a waste of time and money
This book is full of trite, rehashed common-sense information.

This book reminds one of the important things in the life and love of a child. I read it and re-read it.

Big Bucks and Blue Pucks
Published in Paperback by Macmillan Canada Div Of Canada ()
Author: Murray Greig
Average review score:

A History of the World Hockey Association
Greig fills his book with WHA statistics and trivia, but the best part is the narratives spoken by the players. Almost to a man they state they were indentured to the clubs of the National Hockey League. Teams mailed contracts with the dollar amounts filled in. No negotiation. Sign it or be sent to the minors. Goaltender Ken Brown wrote baseball's Curt Flood a letter thanking him for challenging the reserve clause and the status quo. A good book for anyone interested in Hockey and how its system has evolved.

Buck Wild Doonesbury : A Doonesbury Book
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (September, 1999)
Author: Trudeau
Average review score:

I may be in the minority, but I truly dislike "Doonesbury"
I don't like Doonesbury. I admit that. I find I can't abide that fresh mouthed Alex with all of her get rich quick schemes. The way she talks to adults makes one want to backhand her! I also dislike the smarmy balding bulldozer and his equally offensive look alike son. That creepy Alex and that bratty boy are birds of a feather! I also dislike Kim, the sneaky stereotypical Generation X female with the fresh mouth. I'm also no fan of good old Doonesbury himself. I am a Democrat who doesn't like Doonesbury, which is often hailed as the Sacred Cow of Comic Strips.

There was a time when I thought a big drawback to being famous was being lampooned in Doonesbury. I felt sorry for Trudeau's roommate, the Pillsbury heir who inspired this strip. I hate the way this strip puts people down and has an array of unappealing characters, like that talking cigarette, Mr. Butts. Stubb out Mr. Butts!

Boo, hiss, Doonesbury!

good, but considering Doonesbury's rep for excellence...
Buck Wild Doonesbury has some excellent strips in it but the book as a whole is lacking. WAY to much time is spent on Zonker's nephew Zipper. Zipper would be funny in short bursts but a huge amount is dedicated to him. Mike's internet company is losing millions and positions itself to go public...but...you'll just have to wait untill next fall to read about them doing so. At least Duke is in good shape through this book, trying to sell his house (still an orphanage) to a John Denver fan for millions and later becoming appointees for Jesse Ventura. Of course, Duke is always funny. It's also nice to see Roland Hedley make some hilarious appearances but overall this collection does not live up to the extreme standards GTB has set for himself and just makes me more eager for next fall's collection.

Wasn't the best but was still pretty good
I think this had many good strips but was missing to much. It didn't seem like it came after planet doonesbury. I really like the character zipper and if you do i suggest you read this book definetly. I think alex mikes daughter was also very funny as she sets up alex cam. I dont think this is even close to trudeau s other doonesbury books but if you reallly like doonesbury I suggest you get it.

Toss
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (November, 1998)
Authors: Boomer Esiason, Lowell Cauffiel, and Buck Schirner
Average review score:

"Toss" a novel by Norman "Boomer" Esiason
This book is the literary equivalent of an interception run back for a touchdown by the other team. Mr. Esiason is well on his way to winning as many literary awards as he did Super Bowl titles.

Writing was not meant for football players
This book was a disgrace to the literature culture, Esiason's book was so terrible and a waste of my time, I got absolutely nothing out of his book. The language and word choice was that of a junior high student. Sorry Esiason, you may be a great football legend but you can't write!

Can you say outstanding?
Toss is a fascinating read from beginning to end. The twists and turns in the story will keep you gasping for breath with every page. This is not just a book for football fans, it's a book for readers who love a good crime story and a good writer(s) to tell it. Though the dirty secrets of the NFL are a big part of the book, it is the fascinating main character of quarterback Derek Brody that keeps the pages turning. You can't help but wonder just how much of Boomer Esiason is in Derek Brody, which makes it all the better of a read. Esiason (and Cauffiel) has definitely thrown for a touchdown on his first play from scrimmage.
